The Safety of Journalists is a critical issue in today's world, where press freedom is under constant threat. This international conference aims to address the challenges faced by journalists worldwide and explore strategies to ensure their safety while upholding the principles of free speech and independent journalism.

Legal Protection and Accountability: Exploring international legal frameworks and mechanisms to protect journalists and hold perpetrators of violence against journalists accountable.

Digital Security: Addressing the challenges of digital surveillance and cyberattacks on journalists and media organizations, and discussing strategies for digital security.

Safety in Conflict Zones: Examining the unique risks faced by journalists reporting from conflict zones and discussing measures to ensure their safety and well-being.

Covering Crisis and Disasters: Will explore the multifaceted challenges faced by journalists when reporting on emergencies, including natural disasters, humanitarian crises, and public health emergencies such as pandemics. The ethical considerations, safety protocols, and best practices for journalists covering crises, including risk assessment, situational awareness, and effective communication strategies

Trauma Journalism: Understanding the psychological impact of reporting on traumatic events, and discussing strategies for supporting journalists' mental health and well-being.

Gender and Diversity: Exploring the intersection of gender, race, and other identities with journalists' safety, and discussing inclusive approaches to protecting all journalists.

Call for Papers

We invite researchers, journalists, policymakers, and activists to submit abstracts for paper presentations or panel discussions on the conference themes. Submissions should address the challenges and opportunities for ensuring the safety of journalists and promoting press freedom in diverse contexts.

One day of the conference will be dedicated to the presentation of scholarly papers regarding conference topics. These include, but are not limited to, Legal Protection and Accountability, Digital Security, Safety in Conflict Zones, Covering Crisis and Disasters, Trauma Journalism, and Gender and Diversity. We invite researchers, journalists, policymakers, and activists to submit abstracts for paper presentations or panel discussions on the conference themes. Submissions should address the challenges and opportunities for ensuring the safety of journalists and promoting press freedom in diverse contexts. The accepted papers will be added to a collective volume representing the Safety of Journalists Training School and the following international conference. If you would like to participate, please submit the abstract of your paper by July 15th, 2024, and if accepted, you will be notified by July 30th, 2024.  You may submit your abstract here.
